The castle in Darda, which is one of the three oldest castles in this part of Croatia, was built in 1749 as a center of the huge property of Kazimir Esterhazy. A big park surrounds the castle which covers the area of 1,700 m2.
Belje as the castle owner used it till the Croatian war of independence, and during the occupation of Baranja it was used by UNPROFOR and UNTAES.
At the signing of the contract, mr. Goran Pajnić, the CEO of Belje, said: “During our talks with the representatives from Darda Municipality and the Ministry of Culture about the reconstruction and usage of the Esterhazy castle it was concluded that if the castle is given to the Municipality, it is going to be made available to all inhabitants and visitors.”
As Mr. Anto Vukoja, the prefect of Darda Municipality said “The Esterhazy castle is situated in the centre of Darda and is an important building for our town. We have a lot of plans for the castle and we shall do our best to make it functional so that the inhabitants of Darda, as well as all Baranja people and their guests can use it. Once again, I would like to thank Mr. Goran Pajnić, the CEO of Belje, as well as Mr. Ivica Todorić for this big present. I must point out that this agreement is the result of a good cooperation between local community and Belje, the biggest company in Baranja. “
